Revised Plans for Victoria Road Marrickville lodged with Inner West Council Following preliminary consultation last year with local residents and landholders as well as State and Local Government agencies, new plans for rejuvenating Victoria Road Marrickville have been lodged with the Inner West Council for public consultation. For over four years the Victoria Road precinct has been subject to several studies looking at how the precinct can be rejuvenated. Late last year Marrickville Council resolved to support a revision to it’s planning and zoning controls to allow a greater range of uses but to also ensure the precinct remains a centre for local employment. Earlier this year the Department of Planning and Environment also said they supported the planning Proposal acknowledging that the rezoning has strategic merit and should proceed subject to some conditions being met. The Department have now advised that the revised proposal meets all these conditions and can be put to local residents and businesses for comment. The revised Plan has some changes to the previous one exhibited by the former Marrickville Council. “Over 80% of the precinct is to be preserved for employment only uses with no residential development allowed” spokesperson for Danias Timber Sean Macken said. “This allows for some of the existing heavy industry to remain but also allowing for cleaner and greener industries such as the creative arts, showrooms, cafes and galleries”. “Residential will only be allowed on less than 20% of the precinct to the south of the public school and away from the higher aircraft noise areas” Mr Macken said. “Victoria Road is the main gateway for Marrickville, yet it is in need of renewal as a jobs centre” Sean Macken said. “Encouraging newer types of industry should help revitalise the precinct and support more jobs for local residents while also providing a better buffer between industry and the surrounding residential neighbourhoods”. The next stage is to get the local communities view on how the plan should be implemented. “The revised Plan will be publicly exhibited by Council in the next few weeks so local residents and landholders can have their say”.
